Messaging Setup & Compliance
Registration, consent, and the rules that decide whether your texts get delivered at all.
Business messaging registration is reviewed by mobile carriers, not by us, and it takes time. Submit it the week you get your account. Until it's approved, your texts may be filtered or blocked outright.
📱Why registration exists
US mobile carriers require every business that sends text messages to register the business and the type of messages it sends. Unregistered traffic is heavily filtered — messages appear to send successfully on your end and simply never arrive. Registration is what makes your texts deliverable.
📝What you'll need to register
- Legal business name exactly as registered
- EIN or business tax ID
- Business address, website, and support contact
- A description of what you'll text people about
- Sample messages representing what you'll actually send
- A link to where people opt in, and the exact consent wording they see
Registrations get rejected when the opt-in page doesn't exist yet, or the consent wording on the page doesn't match what was submitted. Build the form first. Then register, quoting the live page.
🔑Consent: the rule underneath everything
You may only text people who agreed to be texted by you, specifically. Consent doesn't transfer. Someone who gave you their number to confirm an appointment did not consent to marketing texts.
Your opt-in needs to be:
- Explicit. An unchecked box the person checks. Never pre-checked, never bundled into another agreement.
- Specific. It says who is texting and what about.
- Documented. Keep the record of when and how each person opted in.
Consent wording that works
Place this next to the checkbox on any form collecting a phone number:
By checking this box, you agree to receive text messages from [Your Business Name] at the number provided, including messages sent by automated means. Consent is not a condition of purchase. Message and data rates may apply. Message frequency varies. Reply STOP to opt out or HELP for help.
Adapt the bracketed name. Have your attorney review it before you publish — this page is guidance, not legal advice.
🔤Keywords you must honor
| Reply | What must happen |
|---|---|
| STOP, END, CANCEL, UNSUBSCRIBE, QUIT | All messaging to that number stops immediately, and stays stopped. |
| HELP, INFO | They receive your business name and a way to reach a human. |
| START, UNSTOP | Messaging may resume. |
The platform handles these automatically. Never build a workflow that messages a contact who has opted out, and never re-import a list in a way that clears opt-out status.
⏰Timing and content rules
- Don't text before 8am or after 9pm in the recipient's local time zone.
- Identify your business in the first message of any conversation.
- No public link shorteners — carriers block them. Use your own tracked links.
- Certain categories are prohibited or restricted by carriers, including high-risk financial offers, controlled substances, and gambling.
🚨If your messages stop delivering
- Check your registration status first. Approvals can lapse or need resubmission.
- Look at your recent message content for shortened links or filtered words.
- Check whether you sent a high volume to a cold list — carriers filter on sudden spikes.
- Then contact support with specific examples: the number, the timestamp, and the message body.
